Strategic Partnership with a National Environmental Charity

About The Client

Client: A National Environmental Charity | Industry: Non-Profit

This national charity plays a critical role in protecting marine ecosystems across the UK. With an ambitious mission and a growing public profile, it sought a leadership approach that could match its evolving scale and complexity.

LSP Leadership became a long-term partner, supporting the charity to embed purpose-driven leadership and deepen strategic alignment across all levels of the organisation.

Challenge: Building Leadership Capacity in a Mission-Driven Charity

The client, a UK-based charity dedicated to ocean protection, was at a pivotal moment in its organisational journey. As it scaled its impact and profile, the senior leadership team recognised the need for a more aligned, purpose-driven approach to leadership.

While the organisation had a strong mission and passionate teams, it faced challenges in articulating a clear strategic vision, building cohesion across leadership levels, and embedding a consistent leadership culture.

Key issues included:

  • Varying levels of leadership confidence and capability across teams
  • A need to clarify the strategic direction and operationalise long-term goals
  • Fragmentation in leadership behaviours and culture
  • A desire to align the board and executive leadership on organisational values and expectations

Approach: A Long-Term Regenerative Partnership

In 2019, the possibility emerged for a unique new win-win relationship to be established between the client and LSP Leadership.

As part of its pledge to accelerate leadership for a regenerative future, LSP joined 1% for the Planet and committed to donating at least 1% of annual revenue through both funding and leadership expertise.

We chose the client as our strategic charity partner, enabling them to benefit from leadership development and coaching support on a scale not possible previously.

Since then, LSP Leadership has been supporting the client in its drive to establish ahigh-performance culture based on some important value-driven behaviours.

We have delivered a range of leadership development interventions to date:

  • Continued personal coaching for the CEO
  • Further strategy workshops for the Board and Executive
  • Personal coaching for over 20 senior and middle managers
  • 90-minute virtual developmental workshops on priority issues such as resilience, emotional intelligence
  • Development of equality impact assessments and engagement survey questionnaire

Programme Design: Layered and Evolving

The intervention was structured around several key touchpoints:

  • Board Strategy Days: Facilitated sessions to establish strategic direction, explore leadership responsibility, and define the board’s role in supporting organisational growth
  • Executive Coaching: A confidential space for 20+ senior leaders to reflect on their leadership style, overcome challenges, and grow their capacity to lead through complexity
  • Leadership Workshops: 90m interactive development sessions focused on priority behavioural skills such as resilience, emotional intelligence
  • Culture Alignment: Structured equality impact assessments and engagement survey to embed the charity’s values in daily practice

What Set It Apart: Purpose-Led and Co-Created

The partnership was grounded in shared values and mutual commitment to the charity’s mission. LSP’s approach was adaptive and co-created, enabling the work to stay relevant as the organisation evolved.

Rather than offering a fixed programme, LSP operated as a strategic thinking partner, providing both challenge and support.

Impact: Strengthened Alignment, Strategy and Confidence

  • Clearer strategic direction across board and executive leadership
  • Greater cohesion and trust among senior leaders
  • Increased confidence and capability in leading change
  • A more integrated, values-driven organisational culture

Client Voice

"There is no way we could afford to pay for this level of support and we feel unbelievably lucky - and so grateful – for the generosity of LSP Leadership’s commitment to us.

You can go on courses to learn leadership skills, but they can sometimes be very theoretical. They don’t help you in the same way that coaching does. Coaching is different in that uncovers the things you need to do differently at a deeper level and in a safe environment.

It also challenges you, and supports you, in actually doing these new things in practice.”

CEO and executive coaching recipient
“It’s been a real opportunity for LSP to be able to contribute to the Marine Conservation Society’s drive for greater impact at this critical juncture for us all.”

Simon Bailey, CEO, LSP Leadership

Final Thoughts

True transformation requires a willingness to pause, reflect, and align with purpose. Through a thoughtful and enduring partnership, the client gained the clarity and cohesion needed to lead with confidence in the charity sector.

LSP’s role was to bring structure to complexity, ask the right questions, and hold space for strategic growth. The result is not just stronger leadership - but a more focused, values-led organisation better positioned to deliver on its mission.
